Etsy Craft Party! by jen geigley

Last weekend, crafters all around the world celebrated Etsy's 5th birthday. My pals Leslie and Erin, who I had met through the local craft fairs and such, were kind enough to host a fantastic party for us Des Moines girls. I got to hang out with the lovely Sarah and Stacey and meet lots of other awesome girls who were just as stoked as I was to just hang out, chat and make stuff for an evening.
Carefree Patisserie made this amazing cake for the party (and it was seriously so tasty.) Check out that fondant glue gun with a cord and glue dripping out! (photo by David Poyzer)Our hostesses did such a fine job making delicious beverages and all kinds of summery treats to snack on.
After we had indulged in some snackiness, we all managed to make a few things! There was lots of knitting and sewing going on.
These two made adorable corsages for a prom/party event that they were attending.
A Design Sponge tutorial was in the works with felt, embroidery and buttons.
And Erin provided lots of really cool scraps of paper and photos to make cards or word art. (I totally stole one of her collages at the end of the night!)
We honestly had such a great evening. We gabbed right through our viewing of Handmade Nation, shared our favorite blogs and talked about craft fairs. (Sarah and Leslie of Urban Posture – both of the girls in red above – just returned from Renegade in Brooklyn and will be on their way to Chicago in September.) It was so rad to hang with so many creative local girls and I'm pretty sure we'll getting together again soon. Thanks to everyone for the great time!

I almost forgot to pick a winner from this post! (So sorry!)

The winner is ... nico!
Email your mailing address to jgeigley [at] gmail [dot] com and I'll get a little package mailed off to you this week.

A big thanks to all who commented! (And if you still wanted to grab one of these, I've temporarily reduced the prices on everything in my Etsy shop to clear out some stuff before I go to Renegade. You can find everything here!)

i heart you, roller derby by jen geigley

Do you love roller derby? I love roller derby. I was obsessed with Rollergirls, a derby show that aired on A&E a few years ago. I loved the real-life stories of each of the girls and my favorite players were Lux, Punky Bruiser, Miss Conduct, Chola and Venis Envy. I dreamed of getting a pair of skates and striped legwarmers and getting knocked around (even though I knew realistically I couldn't take the hits.) But I fell in love with the sport and the sisterhood.
Anyway, my pal Shana (that's her on the bike!) told me that Bo and I should come out to see the undefeated Mid Iowa Rollers in their bout against the Iowa City Roller Girls over the weekend. So we did, and what a RAD time we had.
Here's the Mid Iowa Rollers in blue. And the opponent (OCCRG) in red.
And now I have some new favorite roller girls. Like Anna Killakova.
cTAL faTAL.
Wonton Hammer.
Mizz LolliPopYa.
Fanny Firestarter ... and so many more. (She's so fast, she's a blur!)
They were up, they were down ... knocking each other around. These girls are majorly tough!
The home team was trailing by about 20-ish points until the very end and had us on the edge of our seats. They were literally flying past us ... too fast for my camera.
Such a thrill! The final 15 minutes were intense as we all cheered on our jammers and time and time again, they fought and powered their way through the pack ... go, go, go!
And in the absolute final seconds of the bout, the home team pulled ahead by three points for the win!! Such an amazing and well-deserved victory; such a hard fight to the finish. We had a blast watching you battle it out, girls ... and you can bet we'll be back to see you soon!
(xo, your new biggest fan.)

one.sixty.three. by jen geigley

New Dare is up! (Yeah, I know it's been awhile, but it's summer, yo.) Today we're doing mail art. And I can't believe how many mail-things I've hoarded in recent months. I used an arrow-covered envelope from House Industries (Eames!) for the background, and then I threw in little bits of whatever ... tape, labels, postcards, stuff from friends. I bet your mail is cute, too. Fun. Go play.

ode to dad by jen geigley

Dad: he's the fun one; the goofy one. The one who gets the best giggles.
He's the adventurous one.
The snuggly one.
The treat-giver (and sometimes rule-breaker.)
The sweet one and the strong one.
Your protector and your jungle gym.
He adores you and you adore him right back. We're so lucky to have him. Because he's kind of the best.
Lo and I got him this t-shirt from Dark Cycle Clothing for Father's Day, by the way. Cool, yes? We thought it was the perfect thing for the bike and off-road unicycle loving dad. (Happy Father's Day, everybody!)

happy birthday to Etsy + a giveaway by jen geigley

In honor of Etsy's birthday, crafty people everywhere are celebrating by having a great big world-wide craft party. Lucky for me, some super talented Des Moines girls (Erin and Leslie) are throwing a little shindig tonight and I'm hoping to stop by for a little craftification.

Since it's Etsy's birthday, (and Etsy has given all of us crafters such a wonderful opportunity to make stuff and do what we love,) here's a little giveaway. For a chance to win one of my Loopy scarves/necklaces, just leave a comment below with your color choice and I'll pick a winner at random on Monday night. Happy Birthday, Etsy!
p.s. If you live in the Des Moines area, head out to Sonic on 63rd Street tonight to get served (old school) by the Mid Iowa Rollers. (photo by Converging Photography.) Partial proceeds go to the MS Society. (Tomorrow night, I'm going to see their bout against the Old Capitol City Roller Girls ... can't wait to share more soon!)

right now ... by jen geigley

My lovely friends Tina and Vee posted some sweet little lists over the past couple of days, so I thought I'd jump in and do the same.

listening: William Elliott Whitmore (When Push Comes to Love.) Sleigh Bells (all of Treats.) Spinnerette (Ghetto Love.)

eating: a granola bar

drinking: clementine Izze

wearing: a Star-Wars t-shirt and super dark jeans

feeling: cool and calm and happy to not be outside sweating right now

weather: sunny, extremely humid, 91 degrees (with a thunderstorm on the way)

wanting: a grande coffee frappuccino. with maybe a tiny smidge of caramel on top.

needing: a night out with my dude in the Vespa sidecar. a movie or dinner would be perfect.

thinking: about knitting projects, father's day plans, jury duty, and lots of upcoming summer adventures and trips.

enjoying: lazy afternoons with the kiddo, art projects, and hot sunny days at the wading pool.

wondering: if vending at Renegade in Chicago is in my future (or not) and thinking about a crazy Frank-Lloyd Wright inspired house that we drove by a couple of days ago that's up for sale.
(Passing it on ... your turn.)

hello you ... by jen geigley

A couple of weeks ago, my friend Danielle showed me this rad page she made. I found this Blythe pic on Tumblr or something awhile back, and it made me laugh because it totally looks like me and Danielle. Well, if we were dolls. With huge eyes. And coordinating dresses. (Look at us, gazing at each other so lovingly.)
So after she scrapped that pic, I decided I wanted to, too. So here's my page. The bottom pic was taken last summer during a trip to Chicago, and we're making plans to hang out again in a couple of months. Can't wait to see her face. (I honestly hope that we can have adventures like this every summer!)

how we go out by jen geigley

Leslie Hall. Words cannot describe. You may have seen her around; she's been all over Des Moines lately and she and the LYs will be performing at the Iowa State Fair this summer.
You may have heard her songs How We Go Out, Craft Talk or my favorite, Blame the Booty.
Or you may have seen her glitter hands/razzle dazzle guest appearances on your favorite kids' show (and mine) Yo Gabba Gabba.
Friday night, I spent the evening at the Des Moines Art Center with 16 of Leslie's fellow successors to her central Iowa time zone, learning the ways of the diva and receiving the gift that is Leslie Hall. (My photos are terrible but I will share them with you anyway.)
Without giving away too many details about my secret and sparkley education and initiation, there were arts and there were crafts. Gem sweaters. Still life drawings. Over-sized fruit.
Hair coiffing and accessory-making. (These are my two new bff's, Paige and Susie.)
Poetry readings. Supervised snack and beverage breaks. Drive-by makeup application. Ramona and Scrappy.
Leotards revived from 7th grade dance recitals.
Hip rotations. Dance lessons.
And a graduation ceremony with hand-drawn diplomas.
Graduation = gold pants. Gold handmade spandex pants.
(Me and my matching pink and black shoe twin.)
And then? Gold pants graduation dance party!!Which carried over to a group field trip to The Garden.(The whole thing was kind of a blur to be honest.)
And I emerged a new girl altogether. A girl who is unafraid of spandex. With a new understanding and appreciation of dance moves, gem sweaters and dollar-store blue eyeshadow. (A girl who doesn't get embarrassed as easily as she did before.)
